MBAD African Bead Museum is a Detroit-based cultural institution dedicated to preserving African material culture through public art, storytelling, education, and immersive cultural experiences. Founded by renowned artist Olayami Dabls, the museum is home to one of the largest public collections of African beads, artifacts, and installations in the country.
For decades, MBAD has served as a cultural landmark where visitors can explore large-scale outdoor art environments, purchase rare African beads, participate in educational tours, and engage with stories that connect African traditions to contemporary life. Through exhibitions, workshops, artist collaborations, and public programming, MBAD creates accessible spaces for learning, creativity, and cultural preservation.
Located in Detroit’s historic Old Redford community, MBAD welcomes local residents, students, tourists, and researchers from around the world who come to experience its unique blend of art, history, and community engagement.
Today, the organization is expanding its impact through neighborhood revitalization efforts, public art initiatives such as the Grand River Arts Alley, and long-term redevelopment plans for the N’kisi House—an iconic cultural landmark that will become a future hub for storytelling, hospitality, education, and creative entrepreneurship.

Founded by Detroit artist and cultural visionary Olayami DabM African Bead Museum was created from a lifelong commitment to preserving African material culture and ensuring Black stories are visibly represented in public spaces. What began as an artistic practice rooted in beadwork, sculpture, and cultural preservation has grown into one of Detroit’s most distinctive cultural destinations.
For over four decades, MBAD has welcomed visitors from around the world to experience immersive outdoor installations, large-scale murals, rare African bead collections, and educational programming that explores African history, spirituality, craftsmanship, and storytelling. Our work exists at the intersection of art, preservation, education, and community development.
We believe cultural spaces should be interactive, accessible, and deeply connected to the communities they serve.
