We join our wider community in mourning the passing of Ron Scott, spokesperson for the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality and a founding member of the Detroit Chapter of the Black Panther Party. Ron was a friend, a mentor, and a frequent participant in the AMC. Our decision to move the annual Allied Media Conference to Detroit in 2007 was inspired by leaders such as Ron, whose work as an independent film-maker, writer, speaker, radio host, and organizer personified the rich legacy of media activism in our city.
In the video linked below, Ron speaks to our community at AMC2010. He presents his powerful vision for “Peace Zones for Life”:
It’s about rebuilding family, rebuilding connections, resolving disputes before we invite police, about deescalating violence among us so we don’t have to have somebody come in and police us.
Speaking directly to hundreds of AMCers gathered in Wayne State’s Community Arts Auditorium, Ron lifted us with these words:
Don’t ever be discouraged. Don’t ever quit, because you don’t know what the next moment is going to bring. Continue to work. Continue to be vigilant. Continue to love. Continue to have hope because in the re-spiriting of our souls and in the rebuilding of our community, we will find the love and community that we seek.
“We have to know that the healing that begins here this weekend – that you’ve taken all the skills and the hope that you have – and that that healing must be applied to your community…
“We have to start that community here and let it spread and heal… The new movement isn’t about anger, hostility, and pain, but it’s about hopefulness and transformation to change the world outside.
