About
BULK SPACE is run by women and non-binary artists, curators and arts administrators. This project was born out of a need to highlight marginalized voices within the traditional art-world institutions that disproportionately dominate institutional resources.
As established artists and curators, we are committed to building platforms for our peers on the margins through talks, exhibitions, and performances. As a creative laboratory, we identify and develop essential resources for all of our participants, allowing connection with the community to drive conversation and collaboration. Our goal is to rebuild our building, as well as our autonomy, by empowering underrepresented artists to restore and activate what was once a sacred space, honoring the power this structure inherently holds.
Work
BULK SPACE provides Detroit-based artists who utilize experimental practices with studio and exhibition space through Bulk Space Artists Residency (BSAR). The 3-month residency program will activate our west side laboratory (a former church and rising exhibition space) to highlight non-traditional mediums such as performance, installation, and new media arts.
BULK SPACE is a sanctuary for artists and curators to meaningfully engage with community in the creation of new structures of power.
Our work aims to:
Pilot systems of collective accessibility and power that subvert current institutional inequities.
Engage the surrounding communities year-round in public programming through artist-led talks, workshops, family days and community based activations.
Curate a space for rigorous, exploratory art-making by historically underrepresented artists.
Provide access to state-of-the-art equipment to create high-caliber works of art.
By providing our artists and our community with a strong network of support, we aim to re-consecrate BULK as a sanctuary space and restore the ability this structure has to inspire and uplift.
