About

Carpenter EXchange was a 1-2 year multicultural creative placemaking initiative.

It was formed as a strategy to approach public art and activate the Carpenter Corridor on the border between Detroit and Hamtramck. The project hoped to amplify existing cultural assets and deepen collaboration among artist residents in the area. Projects included the Porous Borders Festival, the Teen Girl Video Project, Outdoor Summer Series, and Popps Emporium.

Carpenter Exchange was a project of Powerhouse Productions, an artist-run neighborhood-based nonprofit founded by Gina Reichert and Mitch Cope. The partners are all artists that live and work in the Carpenter Corridor. They realized that by collaborating and being intentional about working together, they would have a stronger impact on the community. The Carpenter EXchange was, in essence, a thread meant to connect the artist partners together and to serve as an anchor in which they are intentionally building relationships, deepening existing relationships, and further rooting themselves in the community.
