About

Hamtramck Free School is a rhizomatic educational project formed in 2013, consisting of curriculum generated by the community members who participate. In the Hamtramck Free School, “free” means both that the school is free of charge and that it is directed towards emancipation.

Building off of Paulo Freire’s model of liberationist learning, HFS embraces a non-hierarchical organizational model, direct peer-to-peer learning, an educational content that grows organically from the needs of the community, and the notion that learning is not limited to information exchange but must include hands-on experience and something akin to the aesthetic experience of being alive in a learning environment.

At the Hamtramck Free School, community members identify learning goals, collectively plan courses, and teach and learn from each other.

The Watch by Raymond Umar Hall

Brutal, honest, compassionate, and critical, The Watch is a must read for anyone brave enough to confront the violence, neglect and torture taking place behind the walls of america’s prisons.

Without going anywhere, Raymond Umar Hall’s The Watch takes you on a tour of the force applied inside the Michigan Department of Corrections. In ten journal entries accompanied by poems, Hall copes with the horrors of the Prisoner Observation Aid program, an in-sourced labor program where incarcerated people are tasked with watching over peers battling suicidal ideation and pharmacological suppression.
