Duration: Full Day (6 hours + presentation)
Participants will learn both games and the theories behind them for promoting ensemble. The group will also select common forms of oppression they consider relevant. Participants will create tableaus, known in Theatre of the Oppressed as images, to illustrate common forms of oppression selected in the morning session. The workshop closes with a public demonstration of the Forum Theatre technique of Theatre of the Oppressed, where the audience is invited to the stage. Participants will learn, and see in practice, techniques for moderating community discussions. The presentation will be free admission and the location is to be determined.

Crazy Black Radical Atheist’s Guide To Recovery: A 12-Step Workshop

Duration: 120 minutes (can be adapted for 90 minutes)
Participants will learn “Image Theater” techniques for analyzing the impacts of oppression in social justice movement spaces. Using 12-step recovery principles, through a secular lens, participants will discover ways to process failure, obstacles and the internalized messages that stall us in our organizing practices. Participants are asked to consider how each step can be applied in a social context, as well in self-care practices.

Intro to the Arsenal of the Oppressed

Duration: 120 minutes (can be adapted for 90 minutes)
Theater of the Oppressed (TO) is a physical theater technique from Brazil, using non-verbal, games and exercises to de-mechanize the body from impacts of routine use. This workshop introduces participants to Augusto Boal’s concepts as well as the games, exercises, and techniques that make up Boal’s system. Come practice this revolutionary approach to self-transformation, expanding physical and mental capacity, and raising critical awareness.
