About
Detroitography features great maps of Detroit. We like to write about maps that other people make about the city, as well as create our own maps of Detroit.
Our focus is on democratizing map making and refocusing data for people-centered innovation.
Alex B. Hill started this project in an attempt to bring together various Detroit cartographers and their great work. Data and maps were becoming prolific in Detroit and he wanted to see a collaborative platform that brought data and maps back to focusing on people, stories, and experiences.
Work
The City of Detroit has a deep history which has changed and shaped its unique geography, economy, and society. Maps offer great insight into the past and help us visualize sometimes confusing information, but they are only one piece of the puzzle.
Since we launched in 2012 we have grown a loyal reader base. Some of our accomplishments include…
- People in 141 countries have viewed maps on the site
- The end of 2013 averaged 4,000 hits per month, until a map was shared of a fantasy regional transit system in December 2013 that reached over 20,000 viewers in 45 different countries. The map was later featured by Wired Magazine.
- Since September 2014, the site has averaged around 10,000 monthly views
