About

We need more and better coverage of movements for social change. It is possible and necessary to write about organizing without doing PR for the people and movements you cover. These are among Dani McClain’s core beliefs, and she is helping to grow the field of journalists and media makers who are working in this vein.

McClain has carried this call for critical reporting on movements to audiences at universities and community-based organizations nationwide. She is happy to discuss her own process and the content of her articles — which focus on race, reproductive health, policy and politics — with journalists-in-training, advocates, students and the generally curious.

Dani McClain brings some of today’s most incisive reporting on social justice movements off the page (or screen) and to you. Through an in-person presentation or via webinar, McClain is available to:

  • discuss her book WE LIVE FOR THE WE: The Political Power of Black Motherhood
  • share the findings of her reporting and news analysis and engage participants in a related discussion.
  • provide trainings on topics including writing about parenting, reporting feature articles, and constructing passionate, well-researched op-eds.
  • share her own experiences building a career in public interest journalism and lessons learned with journalism students and other storytellers-in-training.
  • collaborate with other media makers on special projects or story packages.
  • plan and moderate a panel at your upcoming conference or event.

We Live for the We
In We Live for the We, first-time mother Dani McClain sets out to understand how to raise her daughter in what she, as a black woman, knows to be an unjust–even hostile–society. Black women are more likely to die during pregnancy or birth than any other race; black mothers must stand before television cameras telling the world that their slain children were human beings. What, then, is the best way to keep fear at bay and raise a child so she lives with dignity and joy?
McClain spoke with mothers on the frontlines of movements for social, political, and cultural change who are grappling with the same questions. Following a child’s development from infancy to the teenage years, We Live for the We touches on everything from the importance of creativity to building a mutually supportive community to navigating one’s relationship with power and authority. It is an essential handbook to help us imagine the society we build for the next generation.
